California Chaos, Energy Issues, and the Not-so-Hidden Agendas Once again, California continues to reaffirm its position as the entertainment capital world of the world. This recall movement has provided an incredible array of absurd political jokes, with much absurdity based on actual California legislation. With 135 registered candidates placed on the ballot, arranged in a completely random non-alphabetical order, it's a winner-take-all situation for whoever gets the most votes. Despite the massive number of candidates, there will be no run-off election. Governor Gray Davis may be removed from office if only 49% of the voters vote against the recall, and his replacement may be placed in the office with a mere 20% approval rating. A recall is one thing, but what we've got in California is downright insane. There's been a lot of talk that this kangaroo recall campaign is something that was powered by Karl Rove and company. The Bush team would love to have a R
More FAIR AND BALANCED NEWS Al Franken wasn't the first one to deal with the hypocrisies of Fox News' "Fair and Balanced" trademark. Earlier this year, two TV reporters who had been fired by a Florida FOX affiliate for refusing to air a story containing false and inaccurate information. In a story reported by OrganicConusmers.org , and repeated by From the Wilderness publications , I discovered the following information: "Accepting a defense rejected by three other Florida state judges on at least six separate motions, a Florida appeals court has reversed the $425,000 jury verdict in favor of journalist Jane Akre who charged she was pressured by Fox Television management and lawyers to air what she knew and documented to be false information. In a six-page written decision released February 14, the court essentially ruled the journalist never stated a valid whistle- blower claim because, they ruled, it is technically not against any law, rule, or

August 15th is Fair and Balanced Day!! Al Franken is getting sued by Fox News over his new book "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right?" Apparently Fox News claims it has a trademark on the phrase "Fair and Balanced." The Daily Kos had some interesting comments on the legal ramifications of this lawsuit. http://www.dailykos.com/archives/003775.html#003775 If you have any interest in reading the text of the actual lawsuit, you can dowload it as an Acrobat file. http://news.findlaw.com/hdocs/docs/ip/foxpenguin80703cmp.pdf I think this lawsuit is absolute rubbish, and I hope that this suit does go to court, as Fox News will surely look like complete idiots. How dare they think they can own such a phrase as "Fair and Balanced?!?!" If only they were "fair and balanced".......? In solidarity with Al Franken and the principle concept of the First Amendment, comedian Neal Pollack has decl
More Depressing Mega-Merger News According to a Washington Post article dated August 10, 2003: "Executives and employees of companies seeking federal approval of a controversial merger that would create a Republican-controlled Hispanic media giant are pouring contributions into President Bush's reelection campaign. If approved, the merger of Univision Communications Inc. and the Hispanic Broadcasting Corp. would give one firm as much as 80 percent of the Hispanic television and radio audience in many of the nation's large markets. Major participants in the proposed $2.8 billion merger -- pending before the Federal Communications Commission -- include individuals and corporations that have played central roles in Bush's business and political career." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A39156-2003Aug9.html This is really awful news, and I hope U.S. citizens petition the F.C.C. in record numbers to halt this merger. If you are anger
Bush Vacations, Asks Americans to Work Harder for Less While George W. Bush takes the entire month of August off in Texas, the Bush Administration is seeking to eliminate the right of more than 8 million American workers to receive overtime pay. While Bush rests in Texas, millions of Americans are spending a sleepless summer worrying about their jobs, their paychecks and the economy. At Howard Dean's BlogForAmerica site, you can sign a petition telling the Bush Administration that Americans deserve fair pay for more than a full day's work and to support efforts by Sen. Tom Harkin and others to protect overtime pay for Americans. After you sign the petition, you can follow the link to the AFL-CIO website and stand up with workers all across this country by sending a message to Congress to stop this Administration's attack on America's workers. http://deanforum.com/ aka " Blog For America "
